Common Questions

Does it hurt?

Not really, although sometimes there is a sensation when the needle connects with a your Qi.  However, it is not like what most people equate with the prick of a needle when getting a shot at the doctor’s office.  Acupuncture needles are much smaller in diameter than syringes.

Are the needles reused?

No.  I use disposable needles that are individually wrapped in a sterile container.

Will you have to sit there with needles in you?

More often than not, I do not leave needles in you.  I typically use a technique where I simply put the needle in-and-out quickly.  However, when I do leave the needles in, I am in the room with you.

Is it covered by insurance?

That depends on your policy, however many plans in the State of Washington have some coverage for acupuncture.

Can you benefit from acupuncture if there is nothing wrong with me?

Yes. Acupuncture is preventative medicine that encourages and maintains health, balance and well-being. It can also facilitate emotional and spiritual growth, leading to a more fulfilling, enjoyable life.

Is acupuncture a good solution for non-physical problems?

Yes! Acupuncture can be very effective in resolving non-physical symptoms. As acupuncture treats the whole person, imbalances in one area can affect another. Physical disorders can cause imbalances in your mental outlook or spirit. Likewise, mental problems or imbalances, or shocks to your spirit can cause physical symptoms.

How many treatments are necessary and how often?

The answer to this question varies for every person, depending on the severity of illness, lifestyle and other contributing factors. Generally patients come once a week for four to six weeks.  Then, as health grows, the time between visits is reduced typically to twice a month and then once a month.

Because acupuncture is preventative as well as curative, patients are encouraged to come in seasonally to maintain balance and connection.
